Better To Be Stupid

I've been having problems with insomnia and tonight it's catching up with me. Instead of my usual post, here's a quote from my notes from the recent retreat.

Whether or not a practitioner develops depends on their degree of faith, their diligence, and their discernment. A person to progress most efficiently must be of two types. If you have great discernment you will make great progress because of that. Otherwise it is better to be simple minded. If you are simple minded and believe everything your guru tells you, you will make great progress. The people who have problems is those who are intelligent enough to speculate but are not intelligent enough to discern the truth of the teachings. So what is actually needed is certainty. If your certainty is produced through belief it is easy for the blessings of the guru to enter your heart. If a person has sufficient faith and diligence the blessing of the guru will enter their heart.
